Last night I found some very interesting articles on the CBN NEWS website. While none of the information was new to me because I have been reading about this stuff for the past couple of years I was happy to see it up on the web where I’m sure quite a few people get their information. (Up front warning: CBN NEWS is a christian website but the articles I link to don’t really try and proselytize at all.)

How to Avoid Processed Foods in a Healthy Diet

I was very excited by the fact that the articles author talks about trans fats and quotes Dr. Michael Aziz who says, “Trans fats are really like plastic, and when we eat them they incorporate in our cells and the cells cannot communicate or talk to one another. In turn, hormones are disturbed, weight gain follows but more troubling, the risk for heart disease, cancer, stroke, infertility goes up.”

New York City has banned restaurants from cooking with trans fats. The author quotes a  restaurant owner who says “We cook with a blend of extra virgin olive oil and vegetable oil, we fry with soy oil.” to avoid trans fats. Unfortunately what many people don’t realize is that soy oil has trans fats in it. Although they don’t have to be listed due to some weird regulations of the food industry. Small factual error there.

In an article entitled Brain Shrinkage?Trans Fats Link to Alzheimer’s the same author talks about a study done in Oregon by Dr. Gene Bowman on the elderly and concluded that “In addition to smaller brains, people who ate more trans fats also scored lower on thinking and memory tests.” later it says that these fats aren’t just bad for your brains they harm your heart too.

The article gos on to discuss how those “people who had the largest brains and the highest test scores had blood that contained high levels of the vitamins B,C, D and E and also the seafood type of Omega-3 fatty acids.”  i.e. its not enough to just stay away from bad fat you have to eat enough good fat too. Most of the vitamins listed are fat soluble, which means your body can’t utilize them without fat.

The article that had brought me to the site was entitled Starving cancer: Ketogenic Diet a key to Recovery (Do you suppose the pun was intended?)

The main premise of this article is the very startling news that science has proven with rats that Ketogenic diets help people recover from cancer. Later when the author gos on to talk about what the Ketogenic diet is and what you can and can not eat it grabbed my attention, that one of the things not eaten is trans fats. “Stay away from “trans” fats, such as shortening or margarine, any oil that is hydrogenated. Trans fats are man-made.”

I read a book recently about using the Ketogenic Diet to control epilepsy. It never mentioned staying away from trans fats. So that statement caught my attention. I will have to do some more reading to see if that is a new part of the diet or has always been part of it.
